From the golden age of Saxon industrial manufacturing, an original wrapped bundle of white cotton thread or floss from C.A. Tetzner & Sohn of Schweizerthal, Saxony, in its original brown paper wrapper. The wrapper has the firm's registered factory trademark and documented proof of two major European industrial exhibition awards.
The original wrapper is a document of 19th century German industrial history.
The wrapper names Wilhelm Kressner as proprietor (Inhaber), dating this package to after 1857 when Kressner joined the firm. The registered Fabrikmarke (factory trademark) reads Kressner & Voigtländer, Schweizerthal.
DETAILS
- Supra 4 Draht, No. 12 - the firm's premium 4-ply cotton thread, gauge No. 12
- White cotton
- Substantial bundle, 7 oz, wound and wrapped in original brown paper
- Blue product label intact: "No 12 / Supra 4 draht" in decorative black border
- Thread bundle intact
CONDITION The brown paper wrapper is torn and worn, entirely consistent with 160+ years of age and entirely expected for paper of this era that was not professionally preserved.
The printing on the wrapper remains remarkably legible throughout. The Fabrikmarke, both medal images, firm name, proprietor name and product label are all clearly readable.
The thread bundle itself is intact. The thread has areas of discoloration in areas where the paper tore. The pink string tying it together was added by an owner somewhere along the way.
This is a worn survivor, not a pristine example, but the documentary content of the wrapper is extraordinary and largely undamaged. This is definitely something we have never come across before.
This is an antique item. It has a history. Please read the description and check out the photos carefully, and feel free to ask questions. We want you to love your antique thread.
