Classics Club set of 5 volumes - Aristotle, Plate, Shakespeare, Khayyam, Palgrave - 30s - 40s
Five beige and gray tweed hardcover books published for the Classics Club by Walter J. Black of New York. Although we can only speculate, we think it's fair to say these were part of a set of the world's best literature purchased by families volume-by-volume.
In a finding that was probably much to the family's chagrin, it would appear that you can provide your child with writings by great thinkers, but you can't make them read it, because these books do not appear to have ever been read.
Five Great Dialogues, Plato, translated by B. Jowett, edited with introduction by Louis Ropes Loomis, 1942
On Man in the Universe, Aristotle, edited by Louise Ropes Loomis, 1943
The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, rendered into English quatrains by Edward FitzGerald, 1942
The Golden Treasury, Francis Turner Palgrave, 1932
The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, 1937
