Antique Mettlach etched beer stein - Hildegund #2481 - 1898

Regular price $1,000.00

Antique Mettlach etched beer stein, #2481.  Titled: "Hildegund Refreshes the Wounded." Pewter and stoneware lid. Impressed marks on bottom. Stein is marked with both the incised Mettlach abbey mark and a partial Villeroy and Boch stamped mark which appears to be reversed. Very curious.

The scene on this stein is inspired by a 10th century poem (Waltharius Manu Fortis). It shows Hildegund, daughter of the King of Burgundy, serving wine to Walter, her fiancé and King of Aquitaine; Gunther, King of the Franks; and Hagen, a Frankish nobleman, following an epic battle in which all three were seriously wounded.

Date code dates stein to 1898.

Sticker inside the lid is from Gilman Collamore & Co. at 5th Ave and 30th Street. The firm was founded in 1890 and moved to a new address in 1920.

Size: 14.25'' h x 6" w (including handle)

CONDITION: Very Good. No flaws noted. Pewter dull.
