Spode University of Chicago Plate Harper Memorial Library 1931 Vintage

Vintage 1931 University of Chicago Commemorative Plate of the Harper Memorial Library. Historical souvenir plate was manufactured in England by the Copeland Spode pottery works in 1931. This plate was part of a limited, custom-ordered commission arranged by the UChicago Alumni Council in 1930 for students and alumni. It was part of the only 1490 sets of 12 made.

The center motif is a detailed black transferware illustration of the Gothic William Rainey Harper Memorial Library. Surrounding it is an deliciously ornate frame featuring four additional campus vignettes set inside Gothic architectural window tracery.

On the back is the formal University of Chicago Phoenix coat of arms, the building title stamped "Harper Memorial Library 1913", and the official "Copeland Spode England" hallmark pressed into the glaze.
